Plaid Pre-Election Conference Opens in Cardiff

> from plaidcymru.org

Plaid Cymru’s Pre-Election conference opens today in Cardiff with the message that all Welsh communities deserve strong, locally focused representation in Westminster, from a party determined to put the interests of Wales at the top of the agenda in the event of a hung Parliament.

With a UK General Election a matter of weeks away, Plaid offers every voter in Wales the chance to elect an independent-minded representative who will demand that Westminster delivers fair funding for Wales, and gives the National Assembly the legislative tools it needs to defend the interests of communities across the nation.

Announcing his full slate of 40 candidates, Plaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones said that people’s faith in politicians had not just been shaken by expenses scandals – but by the failure of their MPs to stand up and fight for what is best for their communities.

Mr Jones said that all Plaid MPs and candidates pledge that the best interests of their communities will always be at the heart of what they do.

Plaid Cymru Leader Ieuan Wyn Jones AM said:

“The next general election will be fought during an unprecedented age of mistrust. But while the recent expenses scandal has dominated the headlines, that mistrust has built up over a number of years. It has built up because many people watch their local MP taking action that is clearly not in the best interests of their community. Instead, they see MPs becoming a piece of their party machinery – following their orders and forgetting their roots.

“At the coming election, Plaid Cymru will offer every voter in Wales the chance to choose a different option – an independent-minded MP who will always put the needs of his or her community first. To do that we must make sure that the Assembly is funded fairly and is given the right tools to look after the interests of the communities we serve.

The leader of Plaid Cymru’s group of MPs in Westminster, Elfyn Llwyd MP said:

“With the UK on the verge of a prolonged period of cuts from Westminster, it will be more important that ever that we have a strong contingent of Plaid Cymru MPs in Westminster standing up for our communities and for Wales. We have seen how Welsh MPs from the London parties follow orders, forgetting the needs of their electorate at home. Plaid MPs have never done that and will never do that.

“Plaid MPs will always put the interests of our communities first and will demand a fair deal for Wales in the event of a hung Parliament.”

Plaid Cymru’s candidate in Ynys Mon, Dylan Rees, added:

“One message that we have to send to the London parties loud and clear is that they should never ignore the voices of the people. In my area, we’ve had a Labour MP who voted to close our Post Offices. Instead of investing in our community facilities, they have stripped them down – showing a lack of ambition and lack of understanding of the way we live. The last thing any community throughout Wales needs now is another London party MP who will simply go there and do as they’re told.”
